With his subtle lines, he depicts the industrial environment, architecture and human interaction at Aarhus harbor in an exclusive collaboration with Minimum. After having explored the elements surrounding our residence at Aarhus harbor, Frédéric Forest was inspired to draw a graphic story on the diverse life and vivid activities taking place at the coastline and harbor of Aarhus—the city by the water.
What was your first sight of Aarhus?
I was born in Annecy, on the edge of a lake surrounded by the high Alps. Winter, skiing, and the water are everything to me there. My first sights of Aarhus instinctively plunge me back into my memories of the shores of the lake, swimming in the early morning after arriving by bike, rowing in the autumn on the calm water being accompanied by the swans, diving until late in the night, my friends, my family who join us to picnic in the corners of rivers, reading on the beach, doing nothing on a pontoon all afternoon. The drawings speak of this relationship with water, wherever it is, and those moments we keep and cherish, this relationship that blends the social and personal, the industrial and emotional.
Is there a story behind the order of the drawings?
With regards to the order, I chose to assemble the drawings in a fluid manner. The pontoon represents the starting point, the beginning of the relationship between humans and water. For me, the pontoon is an attachment to a boat, a balcony on the water to sunbathe, and to read. There is no ladder to climb up, we are forced to dive in order to swim.
The industrial basin represents how water is a source of both life and work, all while operating as a flux of transport. The architectural ensemble shows how the city and its threaded design relate to water and its lines, its oblique waves.
And finally, the diving board at the harbor bath symbolizes a return to the simple pleasure of gathering around water and being appeased by it.
Frédéric Forest portrayed by Clementine Giaconia:
Born and raised in Annecy, known as the "pearl of the french alps". An early passion for drawing led him to paris to study design and took him around Europe, working for a host of luxury brands, before settling back into parisian life where he started his own design studio, Forest & Giaconia, with interior and product designer Clémentine Giaconia.
He has a cult-like following stretching across the globe; 170k followers (and counting) as @fredericforest on Instagram and over 2.500 people are permanently wearing his design as tattoos on their bodies.
Frédéric is now dedicating his time to his passion, drawing, in his parisian studio in the 6th arrondissement and has been represented by cūra since 2018.
